 Tips

Search using:

  • Formation names -- Fountain Formation; Pierre Shale.
  • Structural or stratigraphic group names -- Paradox Basin; Dakota Group.
  • Locations -- Jefferson County; Golden quadrangle.
  • Time periods -- Upper Cretaceous; Precambrian.

Don't ignore older works. Some publications (for example field studies) are still valuable after decades.

Geology has many cross-disciplinary ties. Consider searching the literature of other disciplines such as chemistry, engineering, etc.

Conference proceedings, field trip guidebooks, and state agency publications can be difficult to find. Many times a search using keywords from the pubilcation's title is most effective.
