L. W. LeRoy Photographs

Overview of the Collection

LeRoy, L. W. [Leslie Walter], 1909- .
Collection, f. 1970-1987.
15 archive boxes, ~6 linear feet.

L. W. LeRoy, in addition to being a geologist, was a skilled photographer of mining history. His works include "Red Rocks Park: Geology and Flowers" (1978) done in collaboration with his wife, D. O. LeRoy, and "Fading Shadows" (1973), a photographic essay on mining ghost towns coauthored with J. J. Finney.

The LeRoy collection consists of some 1,500 black and white photographs. It is characterized by images of abandoned structures and scenery around deserted mining camps, mines, homesteads, ranches, and small communities in Colorado. Some of these photos were included in LeRoy's "Fading Shadows." The collection also includes photos from other U.S. Western states and from LeRoy's international travels.

About 400 photos from this collection have been selected for a future digitization project. If you would like to donate funds to support this project, contact Lisa Dunn.

Provenance

The initial collection of LeRoy's photographs were donated in the 1990s. A later collection of photographs and slides (not yet indexed) was donated in 2007.
